Orthodontics is not just for the young but also the young at heart. We now have an increasing number of patients past the age of 25 who are looking for orthodontic treatment. You may have issues with crowded or twisted teeth that you’ve always wanted to get treated. Have you lost teeth through extractions or are you wearing away your enamel through grinding? Book in a consult with one of our orthodontists now.
Modern orthodontics allow us to offer more than just traditional braces for adults. If you have cosmetic demands that preclude the use of stainless steel brackets on your teeth then you may benefit from other types of braces.

Ceramics
Ceramic brackets are a good alternative and are significantly less obvious in day-to-day situations. However, ceramics also require more attention to detail in relation to oral hygiene practices, due to the potential for staining and the brittle nature of the brackets.
Lingual braces
These are worn on the insides of your teeth, which prevent them from being seen in a cosmetic sense. They are very similar to conventional stainless steel brackets, however each bracket is custom made to fit each of your teeth. They can require some time to get used to, as they will be placed in the space where your tongue is usually positioned.

At Townsend Orthodontics we provide you with the best in modern and evidence-based orthodontics.
Traditional methods of straightening teeth and correcting malocclusions (abnormal skeletal and dental relationships) involve the tried and tested placement of stainless steel brackets. Movement is then achieved using special wires that slot into the brackets and are held in place with elastomeric modules. It is those modules that can provide you with that bright and colourful smile you so often see with those wearing braces.

Other Types of Braces
Ceramics
If the classic stainless steel look is not for you, or if your job requires a different cosmetic look, ceramic brackets are a good alternative and are significantly less apparent in day-to-day situations. However, ceramics also demand more attention to detail in relation to oral hygiene practices, due to the potential for staining and the brittle nature of the brackets.

Lingual braces
These are worn on the inside surfaces of your teeth, which prevent them from being seen in a cosmetic sense. They are very similar to conventional stainless steel brackets, however each bracket is custom made to fit each of your teeth. They can require some getting used to, as they will be placed in the space where your tongue is usually positioned. These are popular among our adult population.

Sometimes early detection, diagnosis and treatment of a dental or skeletal problem are in the best interests of your child.
The methodology behind early intervention is to assist growth, correction of abnormal airways and bite development. This is so we can minimise the impact of atypical growth on the adult dentition and to reduce the potential need for future treatment.

How to tell if your child needs assessment:

  • Early or late loss of baby (primary) teeth
  • Prolonged thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting or other habits that can affect arch development
  • Difficulty in breathing, chewing or swallowing
  • Crossbites, open bites, overbites or underbites
  • Dysfunctional jaw movement (TMJ disorders)
  • Mouth breathing
